Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide Uses

Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide is a grade of concentrated hydrogen peroxide that meets or exceeds standards set fourth in the Food Chemical Contact Codex.

As I understand it there seems to be some confusion in regards to what constitutes food grade peroxide. All around the internet we will see 3% or other concentrations labeled as food grade. To be a certified Food Grade hydrogen peroxide the solution must be of a strength to perform as intended in industrial applications.

Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide is used in industrial application as a strong oxidizer in the sterilizing of food containers and packaging’s. The food grade hydrogen peroxide most commonly 35% hydrogen peroxide is misted or sprayed onto containers and lids such as coated foil or plastic films just before sealing up the food.

The Food Chemical Contact Codex sets residual limits on how much peroxide can be detected after a determined amount of time. Industrial food packaging moves at fast pace so the food grade hydrogen peroxide must work quickly as well as sanitize the packaging. For this reason peroxide that falls below a 32.5% is disregarded as Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide.
